President Trump has created a three-member White House committee tasked with finding evidence that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook committed mortgage fraud, reviving an effort the Supreme Court already blocked in June for lack of cause. The committee, made up of Kevin Hassett, Andrea Lucas, and Keith Sonderling, will hold a closed-door hearing on Nov. 5, two days after the midterms, and then recommend to Trump whether cause now exists.
Cook's attorneys note that Trump has repeatedly said he has already decided to fire her, which undercuts any claim the hearing is a neutral fact-finding exercise. The dispute traces back to a Bill Pulte allegation last year and sits inside a broader Trump campaign against the Fed over interest rates, which has also targeted former Chair Jerome Powell.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Setting up a committee to find cause after you've already announced the verdict is not an investigation, it's a courtroom built around a conclusion. The Supreme Court already looked at this and said there was nothing there, so now the White House is just trying a new door on the same locked house. A jury that is told the outcome before the trial starts is not much of a jury.
