Michigan Bureau of Elections waives fees, admits error led to Doug Lloyd’s late AG campaign filing

Michigan's Bureau of Elections admitted it gave Doug Lloyd's attorney general campaign an incorrect filing deadline, and said it would waive fees and void a Failure to File notice tied to his late pre-convention finance report. The Michigan Democratic Party's complaint had alleged the report was both late and inaccurate.

A campaign spokesperson said a Bureau of Elections staffer told the treasurer the report was due Aug. 16, when the actual deadline under state law was Aug. 11; the campaign filed Aug. 12. The state's letter conceded it provided 'inaccurate information' while also noting the campaign should have checked the website and law independently.

The letter did not address the complaint's separate claim that Lloyd's report, certified as 'true, accurate and complete,' omits more than five months of contributions and expenditures, showing its last recorded contribution in February 2026 and last expenditure in January 2026 despite covering activity from January through August. Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel called the late filing 'the least concerning aspect' compared to what he characterized as a false report.
