Advocate emphasizes there are no major changes to state election laws this year

Amy Keith of Common Cause Florida told reporters Thursday that no major election law changes affect Florida voters this year, urging people to vote by mail, early, or on Election Day without hesitation. She noted HB 991, which will require proof of citizenship to register, passed this session but won't take effect until 2027, and that a 2021 law still requires voters to re-request mail ballots every even year.

The reassurance comes as a Gallup poll found majorities of Americans worried about election officials being pressured, ballots being mishandled, or intimidation at the polls. Common Cause is also challenging the Trump administration's consideration of sending ICE agents near polling places; a DHS spokesperson said agents could act on an active public safety threat, while Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said ICE would not patrol polling locations.

Common Cause plans to field volunteers across more than 30 Florida counties to run its Election Protection hotline through early voting and Election Day.
