Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told parliament that Armenia will soon begin preparing an official EU membership bid, with a referendum to follow submission.

Russia, which hosts a military base in Armenia and counts it in the Eurasian Economic Union, warned against the move; Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed to Turkey's four-decade wait as a cautionary tale.

Moscow has already imposed import curbs on Armenia, and Putin has invoked the 'Ukrainian scenario' as a warning about where EU ambitions lead.

Nothing says confidence in your alliance quite like reminding a smaller neighbor what happened to the last country that got uppity about the EU. Armenia gets to choose between a customs union with a security guarantee that hasn't guaranteed much, and a decades-long waiting room. Both options come with someone else's finger wagging.
