German AfD lawmaker Markus Frohnmaier met Gazprom chief Alexey Miller in Moscow to discuss restoring Russian gas imports, party deputy leader Beatrix von Storch confirmed to Deutsche Welle. Von Storch said the party wants 'affordable energy and the broadest possible pool of suppliers,' including Russia.

The outreach follows AfD co-leader Alice Weidel's September 9 Bundestag demand for cheap Russian gas, during which she suggested Ukraine bore blame for the 2022 Nord Stream explosions. Reuters has reported that a Putin adviser is coordinating with AfD on a formal bilateral energy conference, with talks possibly set for March 2027.

Before the 2022 invasion, Russia supplied more than a third of Germany's crude oil and over half its natural gas; the AfD has also opposed transferring a decommissioned German gas plant to Ukraine's damaged power grid.

A party that spends its floor time blaming Ukraine for a blown-up pipeline is now sending a member to Moscow to ask the pipeline's owner for a refill. That is not a contradiction to them so much as the whole plan. Cheap gas has a way of making people forget who is selling it and why.
