Three 2026 studies offer a mixed picture of the Amazon's health: an April Nature paper finds the forest heals faster than expected after extreme events but takes longer to recover full biodiversity, while a companion PNAS study based on two decades of research finds the forest more resistant to fire than anticipated, with no sign of shifting to savanna. A third paper, published in Nature in May, warns that deforestation-driven droughts could push the biome to a system-wide tipping point by 2040, and co-author Bernardo Flores suggests degradation factors not captured in the model mean that point could already be closer.

Brazil's space agency has recorded a 74% decline in Amazon rainfall over 35 years, with some areas now below the 1,000-millimeter annual threshold considered necessary to sustain rainforest, and peak temperatures in well-preserved patches reaching 5°C above normal. Researchers caution that regrown forests, while greener by satellite measure, are dominated by fast-growing generalist species rather than the fire-resistant specialists lost to fire and logging, and that these secondary forests are increasingly flammable — a pattern that shifted in 2024, when native forest fires became more common than pasture fires.

Scientists interviewed describe fire as now the primary driver of degradation, creating a feedback loop where burned areas are more likely to burn again, while trees stressed by drought face higher mortality from hydraulic failure, further compromising the forest's capacity to absorb carbon.
