A federal court in Oklahoma denied a class of oil well owners' motion to sanction Sunoco and its lawyers over what the court itself described as tactics that 'needlessly pushed the envelope' and amounted to 'trickery' in appeals meant to delay paying a 2020 judgment. That judgment found Sunoco failed to pay interest on late oil payments owed to the well owners.

Despite agreeing the company's conduct fit the description the plaintiffs used, the court found the specific sanctions requested fell outside what the law allows, leaving the well owners without the penalty they sought even as the court validated their characterization of Sunoco's behavior.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A court can hand you a written finding that you engaged in trickery and still let you walk away without consequence, which is either a gap in the law or a very generous reading of 'pushing the envelope.' Either way, the well owners won their case years ago and are still waiting to actually be paid.
