South Lyon City Council votes to cover cameras, end contract with Flock

The South Lyon City Council voted 5-2 to end its contract with Flock Safety and stop using the two automated license plate reader cameras installed along 10 Mile Road. The resolution orders the police department to stop accessing, searching or sharing any data collected by the cameras with outside agencies, except where legally required.

By 11:45 that morning the department had already covered the cameras and posted about it on Facebook. The council had approved the cameras in November 2025, but reversed course after residents raised Fourth Amendment and data privacy concerns.

A city puts up cameras, residents ask a few pointed questions about who gets to look at the footage, and less than a year later somebody's out there covering the lenses with tape or a bag. That is about as tidy a democracy story as you will find, small enough to fit in one council meeting and settled without a single lawsuit. Other towns wrestling with the same company might notice how simple it was once somebody just asked the obvious question out loud.
