Israel captured Muein al-Arabid, described by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as head of Hamas's internal security apparatus, in an operation near his home in Gaza City, according to the Times of Israel. Netanyahu credited the Shin Bet and Israel Defense Forces and said the officer had helped hide hostages, conceal senior Hamas figures, and rebuild the group's forces.

Netanyahu said Israel will continue pursuing Hamas leadership and everyone tied to the Oct. 7 attack. The capture comes as a US-brokered 15-point peace plan from late July remains stalled, with Netanyahu rejecting troop withdrawal until Hamas fully disarms, even after Hamas said it would accept disarmament contingent on Israel meeting prior ceasefire obligations.

Progress toward any deal has stalled further with Israeli elections approaching.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A war and an election calendar rarely make a good match, and this one is no exception. Every capture gets announced like a turning point, but the ceasefire that would actually turn something stays exactly where it was in July. Watch what gets timed to the vote and what gets left to rot on the table.
