The White House withdrew Richard 'Lance' Schroyer's nomination to lead ICE on Thursday, before he could even appear for a confirmation hearing. The Senate committee's chair, Rand Paul, reportedly had no objections to the nomination.

Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper with nearly 30 years in law enforcement, had helped build Oklahoma's federal immigration enforcement partnership and was allied with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. The White House gave no public explanation for the withdrawal and has not named a replacement.

ICE is currently run by acting director David Venturella, a former GEO Group executive, following the departure of predecessor Todd Lyons after a shooting of two U.S. citizens by immigration officials in Minneapolis. The agency tasked with carrying out the administration's mass deportation campaign has not had a Senate-confirmed director in 11 years.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An agency doing this much of the heavy work in this administration's signature policy still can not get a permanent, Senate-approved boss. That is not a paperwork snag, that is a choice, made twice now if you count how the last acting director left. When nobody wants their name on the confirmation hearing, it usually is not because the job is boring.
