President Trump told reporters on October 10 that Ukraine should replace Volodymyr Zelensky with someone who could, in his words, make a deal, adding that it is time for Ukraine to get a new president.

The comments came a day after Trump reached an agreement with Vladimir Putin allowing Russian diesel fuel to reach U.S. and global markets, with the Treasury Department issuing a temporary license permitting the sales through April 2027 despite existing sanctions. Trump also criticized Zelensky for striking Russian oil refineries, saying Ukraine had been told not to hit diesel fuel because it was a world problem.

Zelensky called Russia's new ability to sell oil products an investment in the war. Ukraine has criticized the U.S.-Russia diesel arrangement.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When a man buys diesel off the fellow who's been setting fire to your barn, then tells you to get a new foreman, you're allowed to wonder whose side of the fence he's standing on. Ukraine gets to pick its own president. Washington might spend a little more time asking why Russian fuel got a pass through April 2027 and a lot less time picking out Kyiv's next leader.
