A new executive order directs the General Services Administration to build America.gov, described as a single secure conversational portal for federal services, with Login.gov handling identity checks underneath it.
The order carves out big exceptions: IRS tax filing and anything touched by the Department of War or intelligence agencies stay off the platform, and OMB can quietly redefine which services count as covered at will.
Section 2 promises the effort will not create a centralized federal database of Americans, even as it consolidates access points and usage data flows to OMB and GSA. One front door sounds fine until you notice the tax man and the War Department got their own side entrances, and OMB keeps a key to rearrange the rooms whenever it likes. A promise not to build a central database, written by the same people collecting everybody's usage data in one spot, is like a neighbor swearing he isn't building a barn while the lumber piles up in his yard. And a super intelligence that's guaranteed accurate and transparent, with nobody named to check it, is a guarantee worth about what you paid for it.
