The New York Racing Association reopened Belmont Park's rebuilt grandstand and clubhouse this week after a three-year, $550-million overhaul, timed to Friday's $1-million Jockey Club Gold Cup.

The marquee matchup organizers wanted, between Sovereignty and international champion Forever Young, fell apart when Sovereignty developed a hoof abscess and was scratched, leaving Forever Young the heavy 3-5 favorite in a seven-horse field.

The rest of the field includes Baeza, seasoned by the same top-class competition Forever Young has largely avoided by racing overseas, and Phileas Fogg, whose connections presumably enjoyed naming a racehorse after a fictional globetrotter.
