Democrats gain 4 in US Senate GOP on Iran war resolution, but vote falls short

The Senate voted 49-50 against a House-passed resolution to curb President Trump's military action in Iran, with Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul and retiring Thom Tillis joining Democrats in support. Diesel hit a record national average of $6.52 a gallon Tuesday, and Americans are paying $1.30 more per gallon of gas than a year ago, according to AAA.

Vulnerable Republicans in tight races, including Ohio's Jon Husted, Alaska's Dan Sullivan and Kansas's Roger Marshall, voted against the measure despite Husted himself saying a day earlier that the war needs to end to lower gas prices. Trump this week told reporters he has been considering a ban on diesel exports, a day after the White House denied a report it was preparing exactly that.

This marks the 15th time Senate Democrats have forced an Iran war powers vote, and the second time this year such a measure has come close to passing, after a similar resolution succeeded 50-48 in June before stalling elsewhere. Trump told the UN General Assembly this week he would consider actions to ‘annihilate' Iran's population if no deal is reached, a comment he has made in similar form since April.

A senator can say out loud that the war is driving prices up and still vote to keep his own hands off the steering wheel. That is not caution, that is just arithmetic about which vote costs less back home. Four Republicans broke ranks and it still wasn't enough, which tells you plenty about where the other fifty stand when the price at the pump is somebody else's problem to fix later.
