The Wrong Girls, directed by Dylan Meyer, follows stoner roommates Molly (Alia Shawkat) and Frankie (Kristen Stewart) who acquire a briefcase of experimental drugs and telekinetic powers after Frankie is mistaken for a lookalike at a punk show.
The pair are then chased across Los Angeles by people who want the briefcase back, aided or hindered by cats voiced by Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani and a mad scientist played by Kate McKinnon.
The review credits striking underwater-fantasy visuals from cinematographer Todd Banhazl but says the jokes land a mile off and the plot thins out well before the 99-minute runtime ends.
Neon, the distributor behind Parasite and Anora, is giving the film a nationwide US theatrical rollout starting August 14, with UK and Australia dates still pending.
