Attorney Alexa Sendukas, who represents unaccompanied children in ICE custody and works to reunite them with relatives, describes a tactic in which federal agencies use the children as bait to detain adults who arrive at detention centers to pick them up. The approach has left families uncertain when they will see each other again.

Sendukas, a managing attorney with the Galveston-Houston Immigrant Representation Project, discussed the practice on a podcast episode that also covered unrelated state news including opioid settlement funds and declining school enrollment.

Using a child's release as the hook to catch a parent is the kind of tactic that reads like a plot twist nobody wanted, except it's real and somebody signed off on it. A system that claims to prioritize child welfare doesn't get to treat a kid's guardian as a fish to be reeled in. That contradiction ought to bother more people than it apparently does.
