Zelenskyy names Anton Kovalskyi as Ukraine’s acting prosecutor general

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named Anton Kovalskyi, previously head of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast prosecutor's office, as Ukraine's acting prosecutor general, according to a presidential decree issued September 17. The appointment follows the ouster of Ruslan Kravchenko, who filed forgery-related criminal charges against National Anti-Corruption Bureau director Semen Kryvonos and then left the country using a scheduled Lithuania trip.

Kryvonos denied any formal charges existed and called the case fabricated; NABU and its partner anti-corruption prosecutor's office described Kravchenko's actions as a systematic attack on independent institutions. Zelenskyy told parliament Kravchenko had one option left, resignation, and lawmakers voted 317-0 to approve it before Zelenskyy signed the dismissal decree.

Kovalskyi previously served as deputy head of the Vinnytsia Oblast prosecutor's office and later led the Chernivtsi Oblast office before his most recent post.

When your prosecutor general responds to a corruption accusation by filing his own counter-accusation and then skipping the country on a business-trip technicality, the office itself has become the scandal. A unanimous 317-0 vote to get rid of him tells you everybody in that chamber already knew which way the wind was blowing. Handing the job to a regional prosecutor nobody outside Khmelnytskyi had heard of is the political equivalent of grabbing whoever's closest when the house is on fire.
