Volodymyr Zelensky told ABC's Jonathan Karl that Ukraine would hold elections if Vladimir Putin agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, saying it's up to Ukrainians, not outsiders, to decide when to vote and for whom. The remarks came a day after Trump suggested Ukraine needed a new president who could make a deal.
Trump also criticized Zelensky over strikes on Russian oil refineries, saying Ukraine had been told it could do what it wanted to Russia except hit refineries, which he called a world problem. Zelensky responded that Kyiv would halt refinery strikes only if Moscow stopped hitting Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

An American president telling a country at war to swap leaders mid-invasion is a strange kind of diplomacy, like a neighbor telling you to fire your dog while his own hound is the one tearing up your fence. Zelensky's counteroffer, a vote only after a truce Putin has shown zero interest in granting, reads less like a plan than a mirror held up to the demand.
