Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds named Florida state Sen. Bryan Avila, of Miami Springs, as his running mate for lieutenant governor. Avila has served in the Legislature since 2014, sponsoring the ‘Stop Woke Act,’ data center regulation, and the constitutional amendment on property tax cuts headed to November's ballot.

Avila, the son of Cuban exiles, warned against Democrats ‘casually embracing socialism,’ despite Democratic gubernatorial nominee David Jolly explicitly rejecting any socialist affiliation. The socialism warning appears aimed instead at Angie Nixon, the Democratic U.S. Senate nominee and a Democratic Socialists of America member, not at the governor's race itself.

Donalds dismissed the Jolly-Graham ticket as boring; Jolly responded that the race will hinge less on Avila than on Donalds' relationship with Donald Trump.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Running against socialism when your actual opponent for governor has gone out of his way to call himself a capitalist is less a debate strategy than a rerun of a tape that's always worked in South Florida before. It costs nothing to say and requires no rebuttal from the person it's not actually about. Political efficiency, if nothing else.
