Sen. Ruben Gallego released a plan to rebuild the federal role in education, reversing cuts to the Department of Education and prioritizing funding for low-income and disabled students, should Democrats win a majority this November.
The plan targets teacher shortages with loan forgiveness and smaller class sizes, chronic absenteeism with mental health funding and family outreach, and would deprioritize Trump's school voucher push in favor of public schools that must accept all students.
Gallego pointed to Arizona's voucher program, which costs the state over $1 billion annually and has drawn criticism for lack of oversight, as a cautionary example. He acknowledged that even a Democratic win in November leaves the plan facing a Trump White House through 2028.

A wish list is easy to write when you don't have the votes yet, and Gallego knows it, which is at least more honest than most rollouts. Betting on Trump getting bored and wandering off is not exactly a governing strategy, though it's not the worst read of the man either. The real test comes if Democrats actually win in November and have to turn a press release into a bill somebody signs.
