Friday's network evening newscasts led with the Luigi Mangione guilty plea, but only NBC Nightly News mentioned newly released FBI statistics showing violent crime, murder, and robbery all dropped in 2025, with anchor Tom Llamas citing the biggest one-year decline in nearly a century of record-keeping. ABC and CBS skipped the crime data entirely on their broadcasts.

ABC instead ran a segment on the White House's $400 million ballroom project, with correspondent Mary Bruce detailing gold presidential seals, yellow marble floors, and Corinthian columns as the administration appeals to the Supreme Court to keep construction going past a court-ordered pause. The White House has argued halting work threatens presidential security, citing unspecified assassination attempts, while the National Trust for Historic Preservation accused the administration of racing to finish before Trump leaves office.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Network news exists to make choices about what matters, and ABC chose gold seals and yellow marble over the country's homicide rate. That's not bias in the sense of picking a side on the numbers — it's bias in the sense of deciding decor is more newsworthy than whether people are getting killed less often. Both things can be true and still make for a strange set of priorities.
