Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong, 29, pleaded guilty Wednesday to foreign collusion, a charge carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, in his second national security trial.

Prosecutors say Wong lobbied for international sanctions against Hong Kong and China after Beijing's 2020 national security law took effect, including meetings with foreign politicians. Wong is already serving a nearly five-year sentence and had been due for release in January.

His lawyer asked the judge for a sentence of three to ten years, noting Wong has already spent about six years in prison; a sentencing date was not set.
