Eight Northeastern states led by New York and Maine filed suits accusing the Interior Department of paying Bluepoint Wind and Invenergy a combined $1.4 billion from the federal Judgment Fund to cancel four offshore wind projects.
New York Attorney General Letitia James says the canceled New York projects alone would have brought $16 billion in investment, 2,800 jobs, and power for 4 million homes. The money instead funds gas plants in five other states and geothermal projects out west, none of which will feed New York's grid.
Connecticut's attorney general called it business bribes for Big Oil. The Interior Department calls the payouts settlements that went through appropriate channels, citing unspecified security concerns it declined to explain.

Paying somebody a billion and a half to not build a thing is a new one on me, and I've watched a lot of contracts get torn up. The part I keep chewing on is that the money didn't even stay in the neighborhood where the wind was supposed to blow. And when a department tells you it can't explain the security concern, well, you can go ahead and write your own explanation in the margin.
