The Los Angeles Unified School District and New York City Public Schools, the nation's two largest, both restricted generative AI on school-issued devices for the current school year. Los Angeles barred it outright while a committee works on future recommendations; New York imposed a one-year moratorium for pre-K through eighth grade, affecting an estimated 600,000 students.

High schoolers in New York will still take twice-yearly 45-minute AI literacy modules, and some career-focused use and pilot programs will be allowed. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a news release that the tech industry's claim that AI-powered education is inevitable does not match how the city sees it. Smaller districts in Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Texas and Washington have taken similar steps, and about half the candidates for Chicago's school board have pledged support for a three-year moratorium.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Banning something for a year while a committee studies it is what an institution does when it doesn't yet know what it thinks, which is at least more honest than pretending it does. Six hundred thousand kids get to finish the school year the old-fashioned way, typos and all. The tech industry will keep insisting this is inevitable right up until enough school boards prove it isn't, at least not on their timeline.
