Michigan rabbis push El-Sayed to change rhetoric on Israel, ensure safety of Jewish community

A coalition called Nonnegotiable Michigan, made up of Jewish clergy and synagogue lay leaders, launched Tuesday to press Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed on his rhetoric toward Israel. The group says it represents 40,000 Jewish voters and is circulating a petition asking El-Sayed to commit to principles including community safety and self-determination ahead of the November 3 general election.

El-Sayed, whose primary campaign made AIPAC a target and who has criticized U.S.-Israel policy over the Gaza war, says he has been meeting with Jewish leaders in closed-door sessions and public statements to rebuild trust. His campaign points to a press conference pledge equating Jewish safety with the safety of his own daughters. Meanwhile Republican nominee Mike Rogers has been courting some of the same disaffected Democrats, with rabbi Asher Lopatin joining that outreach effort directly.

Forty thousand voters asking a candidate to say plainly what he means isn't a speed bump, it's just politics working the way it's supposed to. El-Sayed can meet behind closed doors all he wants, but a petition with a number attached is the kind of thing that shows up again in October if the answers don't land. The candidate who figures out that clarity beats a well-run coalition meeting usually ends up with more votes, not fewer.
