Massive drone strikes catch western Ukraine by surprise – expert

Presidential defense advisor Serhii Beskrestnov said a recent wave of Russian drone strikes caught western Ukrainian regions unprepared, with local authorities now scrambling to ask about interceptors, licenses and pilot training. Attacks on September 12 and 13 hit Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Lviv, Vinnytsia and other oblasts, striking railway infrastructure, a residential building in Stryi, and industrial sites.

Casualties included at least one person injured in Ternopil, one in Ivano-Frankivsk, and five in the Kovel district, plus two people killed at a grocery store in Zviahel on September 12. Beskrestnov said Kyiv and central and southern Ukraine had built stronger defenses, while the west is only now moving to deploy mobile fire teams and radar stations.
