VoteVets, co-founded by Iraq War veteran Jon Soltz, plans to spend $60 million on 331 Democratic candidates this cycle, its largest effort yet, according to the New York Times. Its PAC had raised about $26 million and spent about $31 million as of Aug. 31, with roughly half of its $18.3 million in independent expenditures going to back Iowa's Josh Turek against Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson.
The group also spent more than $1 million helping Luke Bronin defeat sitting Rep. John B. Larson in a Connecticut primary — not over policy disagreements, Soltz told the Times, but because they wanted a veteran holding the seat for the next three decades. In 2024 the PAC spent about $13.6 million on independent expenditures, including $2.9 million backing Senate winner Ruben Gallego.

Wanting a veteran to chair the Veterans Committee someday is a fine enough reason to back a candidate, but it's worth noticing that's a plan measured in decades, not policy votes. Knocking off a sitting member of your own party because you'd rather have the uniform than the incumbent is a pretty blunt way to make that point. At least they're upfront that it's about the resume and not the rival's record.
