President Trump personally welcomed Chinese leader Xi Jinping at a tarmac ceremony outside Washington, rolling out a 100-foot red carpet that mirrored the one prepared for Vladimir Putin's Alaska visit last summer. Xi declared that China and the United States must be partners rather than rivals, and that both nations' national projects could advance together.
The visit continues with a Rose Garden military review, closed-door talks, and an East Wing state dinner on Sept. 24, followed by a National Archives tour on Sept. 25 timed to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. A carpet's length doesn't tell you a thing about what got decided on top of it, and this one was measured out identical to the strip laid down for Putin last year, like a restaurant reusing the same tablecloth for every big spender. The ceremony is the message here, since nobody's saying much about what was actually agreed. Long carpets are cheap. Everything else about this relationship is not.
