Researchers fitted 28 cats, 18 with outdoor access and 10 strictly indoor, with movement trackers for a week each in summer and winter to log exactly how they spend their days. The verdict: cats walk less than 5 percent of the time, spend roughly three-quarters of their lives lying or sitting, and devote about 5 percent each to grooming and eating.

Even the outdoor cats, given the run of the neighborhood, still spent over a third of their summer hours simply lying around. The study apparently required real trackers, real scientists, and real data collection across two seasons to arrive at a conclusion available to anyone who has ever stepped over a cat on a windowsill.

You could have saved everybody the trouble by just asking the cat, except it would not have looked up. The tracker data mostly proves that grant money can confirm a nap schedule with impressive precision. Somewhere a cat is being handed a peer-reviewed paper about itself and using it as a heated surface.
