Ilias Kasidiaris, former spokesman for Greece's neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, was released from prison Tuesday after serving six years of a 13-year sentence and immediately announced plans for a new far-right party. Golden Dawn carried out years of violence against migrants and opponents, including the 2013 murder of antifascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas, for which Kasidiaris was convicted as a leading member.

Supporters greeted him with chants of making him prime minister, while he called his imprisonment a political conspiracy. Elon Musk had publicly called his continued incarceration 'messed up' in July, and Kasidiaris has praised Musk as the world's most eminent personality.

Legal experts note Kasidiaris remains barred from running for office until 2033, when his original sentence was to end, with the Supreme Court to rule on his eligibility ahead of Greece's 2027 elections. His prior party was already blocked from the ballot in 2023, though a Kasidiaris-backed splinter group still drew over 240,000 votes.
