Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told the Republican midterm convention that Trump has gone from a president who couldn't stay awake to one who refuses to sleep, contrasting him with predecessor Joe Biden. Social media users quickly responded with a collection of images and video showing Trump appearing to doze at various public events, including cabinet meetings and a peace summit.

Trump has previously said he is merely resting his eyes and finds it relaxing, while a CNN medical analyst has publicly suggested he be evaluated for sleep apnea. A House Democrat has separately called the pattern a national security concern.

Praise this thick is easy enough to check, and that is the trouble with it. When a man tells a hall full of people his boss never sleeps, and a whole country has pictures of the boss asleep at a meeting, he has picked a boast that anybody with a phone can weigh. Resting the eyes is a fine explanation right up until somebody starts a scrapbook.
