At a Saturday debate, Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan appeared to glance at Democratic challenger Mary Peltola's paddle before answering a yes-or-no question about NOAA and fisheries management. Peltola, a former commercial fisherman, answered immediately with a NO; Sullivan, a recreational fisherman, needed prompting before copying her answer, drawing laughter from the audience.

Peltola mocked the moment on social media afterward, posting ‘Happy to help, Dan’ and arguing Alaskans deserve a senator who knows where he stands. The race is considered a toss-up in a ranked-choice format, a rare competitive opening in a state that hasn't sent a Democrat to the Senate since 2008.

Copying off your neighbor's test was a bad idea in the fourth grade and it's not much better in a Senate debate with cameras rolling. The paddle was supposed to make the moment simple: hold up your answer, no dodging. Instead it made the dodging visible to everybody watching.
