The General Court of the European Union dismissed Hungary's challenge to a June 2024 decision steering profits from frozen Russian assets toward Ukraine's military, ruling the underlying choices were political and strategic, and therefore outside judicial reach.

Hungary had abstained on an earlier decision, which other governments then used as grounds to exclude Budapest from a subsequent vote on funneling money to Ukraine's armed forces. Hungary argued its complaint was about being denied a vote, not about the weapons themselves, but the court found the same jurisdictional wall applied to the process as to the substance.

The judges specifically noted the funding covered ammunition, missiles, air-defense systems, and required deliveries by the end of 2024, details that reinforced the decision's strategic character and put it beyond review. Hungary must now pay its own legal costs plus those of the council and the fund, and can appeal on points of law within two months and ten days.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A researcher pointed out the neat trap here: Hungary has spent years insisting Brussels judges should stay out of foreign policy, and now that's exactly the reasoning that shut its own complaint down. That's the kind of poetic justice you can't order off a menu. The money keeps flowing to Ukraine either way, which was probably the point all along.
