David Sudworth, trading as Mr Soot, expanded his Wigan-based chimney-sweeping business into Manchester, territory long occupied by a rival outfit called Sparkling Flues. That expansion prompted the rival to set up websites containing what a legal ruling described as 'offensive and derogatory content' about Sudworth, reportedly branding him a backstabber.
Sudworth took the matter to court and won. The case turned an ordinary bit of small-business competition into a legal ruling, complete with findings about the offending websites.
The dispute arrives, per the report, amid a broader resurgence in the chimney-sweep trade, suggesting there is apparently enough hearth-cleaning business in Greater Manchester to fight over.

Two men who clean soot for a living ended up covered in something messier: a lawsuit. It is a strange thing to watch grown business owners build entire websites just to call each other names, but that is apparently where a turf war over chimneys lands these days. The moral here is the same one your grandmother's sweep probably told her: watch who you make an enemy of, because they might just outlast the fire.
