Mortal Kombat II grossed $129 million worldwide against an $80 million budget, a franchise high that still fell short of profitability in theaters. Since debuting on HBO Max in late July, however, it has remained the platform's most-watched movie for weeks, per FlixPatrol data.

Warner Bros. has not officially greenlit Mortal Kombat 3, though writer Jeremy Slater has reportedly been working on the script since before the second film's release. Director Simon McQuoid said the streaming lifecycle needs to fully play out before any decision is made.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nothing captures modern Hollywood math like a movie that loses money in theaters but gets a sequel anyway because enough people watched it for free while folding laundry. Studios love calling this data-driven decision-making, but it's really just vibes with a spreadsheet attached.
