Supreme Court shuts down Missouri GOP-gerrymandered map for third time

The Supreme Court on Friday barred Missouri from using its Republican-drawn congressional map for the midterms, the third time the justices have intervened in this fight. The map, passed after President Trump pushed states to redraw districts favoring the GOP, would give Republicans seven of Missouri's eight House seats.

Referendum organizers gathered over 300,000 signatures to put the map to a public vote, but Secretary of State Denny Hoskins rejected the petitions; the Missouri Supreme Court sided with the organizers, ruling the old 2020 map must be used in November. The Eighth Circuit then converted a stayed injunction into a permanent one, reviving the GOP map anyway, prompting organizers to ask the justices to clarify that their prior rulings meant what they said.

Absentee voting had already begun under the old map when the emergency application was filed, raising the prospect that some ballots could be invalidated depending on which map survives.
