Marina Abramović has created Snowy/Windy/Spring on Planet Z, an installation at New York's newly opened Balloon Museum, which bills itself as the first permanent home for inflatable art. The piece features oversized inflatable grass, falling paper snow, a curving path, and headphones playing Abramović reciting exoplanet names — her first work in this medium, commissioned after the Rome-born museum's successful 2023 pop-up.
The museum's flagship exhibition, Daydream, includes 14 installations from artists including Turner Prize-winner Martin Creed, housed in the former Tin Building food hall. Unlike many of the museum's mirror-heavy, selfie-friendly installations, Abramović's piece notably omits reflective surfaces, in keeping with her longtime interest in slowing visitors down rather than accelerating them toward a photo.
Abramović, 79, compared the commission to Renaissance artists working under strict patron demands, framing it as a challenge rather than a departure from her practice. She said she has not yet seen the finished result and remains indifferent to critical or public reception, per her own account.
