The European Commission added ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox to its list of 'very large online platforms' under the Digital Services Act, triggering tougher obligations on illegal content, minors' safety and electoral risk. ChatGPT crossed the 45-million-monthly-user threshold with more than 159 million EU users as of March, and was reclassified by Brussels as a search engine to fit it into the existing framework.

The three companies now have four months to comply or face fines of up to 6% of global revenue, a penalty regime the bloc has already used against Temu, AliExpress and X. OpenAI said it was 'preparing' for compliance, while Roblox called itself 'proud' to be first among gaming platforms to receive the designation.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nothing says corporate contrition like being 'proud' to receive a regulatory designation meant to signal you might be a problem. The EU's real innovation here isn't policy — it's getting Silicon Valley to spin punishment as an honor.
