Russia's parliamentary elections run September 18-20, 2026, with Vladimir Putin's United Russia expected to win despite polling around 32 percent, its lowest support since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Ten of nineteen registered parties will appear on the ballot, all screened by the Kremlin to avoid real opposition.

The election watchdog GOLOS has been disbanded, European monitors weren't invited, and the vote will stretch across three days with heavy online balloting, conditions analysts say make quiet manipulation easier to hide. Yabloko, the sole anti-war party briefly approved to run, was later barred by the Central Election Commission; its deputy leader was sentenced to 11 years for spreading military ‘fakes.’

With no anti-war option on the ballot and casualties concentrated in rural regions already squeezed by fuel shortages and inflation, the real contest isn't whether United Russia wins but whether the Kremlin can manufacture its usual two-thirds majority without visible strain.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A three-day vote counted behind closed doors and an online ballot nobody outside the building can check isn't exactly an invitation to trust the numbers. When the only party willing to say the war was a bad idea gets kicked off the ballot a month after getting on it, you don't need a statistician to tell you what kind of contest this is. Calling it an election is like calling a rigged county fair raffle a game of chance.
