Carlos Alcaraz learned during a live ESPN interview after his fourth-round win over Tommy Paul that his U.S. Open quarterfinal opponent would be Ben Shelton or Stefanos Tsitsipas, not the matchup he assumed. Andy Roddick informed him on air, prompting Alcaraz to lean over and check the paper himself before reacting with surprise.

Alcaraz said he thought he'd be facing the winner of Daniil Medvedev versus Frances Tiafoe, a match Tiafoe won, though Tiafoe now advances to face Alex Michelsen instead. Shelton beat Tsitsipas in straight sets to set up his match with Alcaraz.

Not knowing your own next opponent deep into a Grand Slam is either monkish discipline or a sign nobody handed him a bracket sheet all week. Either way it made for better television than most postmatch interviews manage, since genuine surprise is getting rare on live TV.
