German officials publicly blamed Russia for an attempted sabotage of a Ukrainian An-124 cargo plane at Leipzig airport, announcing the closure of Russia's Consulate General in Bonn and its cultural center in Berlin. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul detailed the response at a news conference, alongside tightened entry rules for Russian citizens.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte both backed Germany's account, with Rutte calling the evidence 'clear' and welcoming the countermeasures. EU foreign ministers are reportedly preparing additional sanctions.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed the accusations as an invented pretext, accused Berlin of complicity in the Ukraine conflict, and promised Russia would respond to the closure of its cultural center.

Both sides are, as ever, entirely certain of their own righteousness and entirely unburdened by evidence presented to the public. Somewhere between 'the evidence is clear' and 'they've invented a pretext' sits the actual truth, currently unavailable for comment.
