Federal Real Property: GSA Should Take Additional Steps to Improve Agencies’ Awareness of Meeting Spaces List

GAO found that federal buildings often contain meeting rooms and conference centers that could be shared across agencies to cut costs, and GSA maintains an online list of spaces agencies have volunteered to share. But most tenant agency officials GAO interviewed in selected buildings had never heard of the list, and GSA said 2025 staff turnover meant many of its reminder emails simply bounced.

GAO recommended GSA improve the list's completeness and make sure agencies actually know it exists. GSA agreed and says it's developing a plan.

A shared conference room nobody knows about is really just an empty room with extra steps. GSA sending emails that bounce and calling that an outreach strategy is the kind of thing that would get a business shut down, but here it just gets another GAO report. Maybe the fix isn't a better list, it's a phone call.
