A study of long-finned pilot whales in the Strait of Gibraltar found the animals can raise the volume of their short-range calls to compete with noise from roughly 60,000 ships passing through each year, but struggle to do the same for long-distance calls used to stay in touch with pod mates farther away.

Researchers say this could leave whales unable to overpower shipping noise when calling distant group members, raising concerns that individuals could become lost or isolated from their pods.
