Olive Branch, Mississippi mayor Ken Adams declined to lower the town's flags to half-staff for Dolly Parton, who died August 25 at 80, despite President Trump ordering U.S. flags nationwide lowered for a week in her honor. Adams argued in a Facebook post that half-staff honors should be reserved for 'truly extraordinary circumstances' and that a mayor shouldn't simply 'salute and execute' presidential directives.

The post drew over 2,000 comments, many blasting Adams for denying what commenters called a deserved tribute to the 11-time Grammy winner, citing her philanthropy including the Imagination Library. Some defended Adams, arguing the honor should be reserved for those who held public trust or died in service rather than beloved entertainers.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A mayor picking a symbolic fight over flag etiquette while the President hands out half-staff honors like party favors is exactly the kind of dispute a republic manufactures when it has nothing more pressing to do. Both sides get to feel principled; nobody's constituents get anything out of it. File under: democracy, working as intended, mostly for content.
