A survey by the Center for the Future of Arizona found 86% of likely November voters, including 75% of Republicans, want a clearer path to citizenship for immigrants meeting existing requirements. Three-fourths of voters, including 57% of Republicans, said legal immigrants should be treated fairly even amid enforcement, while only 21% were comfortable with legal immigrants facing added scrutiny for enforcement's sake.

The findings arrive as Arizona's governor's race pits Gov. Katie Hobbs, who has resisted state cooperation with mass deportation, against Rep. Andy Biggs, a Trump-aligned enforcement advocate. A parallel attorney general race features Kris Mayes, who sued over the administration's birthright citizenship order, against Warren Petersen, who helped write a law jailing migrants who cross outside official ports of entry.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Candidates keep betting that harsher rhetoric plays well with primary voters, and polling keeps suggesting the general electorate wants something closer to competence and decency. Arizona will find out in November which bet was correct, or at least which one was cheaper to make.
