Jackson police arrested Jacques Ratliff, 51, in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, 29, whose body was found hanging from a tree on Aug. 3. Police Chief RaShall Brackney said the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide after weeks of investigation and more than a dozen interviews, and said the two had some undefined 'association,' with additional arrests possible.

Brackney cautioned the public against speculation, saying the case is not concluded and that the investigation must be guided by evidence. Fortune's family, through a GoFundMe campaign, described her as a devoted mother and expressed faith that justice would be served.

The report situates the case alongside other recent Mississippi hanging deaths, including that of Delta State student Trey Reed, ruled a suicide but disputed by his family, and Cory Zukatis, also ruled a suicide, as well as the unresolved case of Nolan Xavier Wells.
