A New York Times report by Maggie Haberman and Jim Rutenberg says the White House's 2025 ban on Associated Press access stemmed partly from the wire service's refusal to hand Trump's team rights to its photo of him bloodied and fist-raised after the Butler, Pennsylvania rally attempt. The White House had publicly attributed the ban to AP's refusal to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”
White House aides reportedly tied the ban to the photo dispute during a private 2025 lunch with Trump and network anchors. AP reporters were barred from multiple events, including a Musk-Trump Q&A, before a federal judge ruled the ban a First Amendment violation.
Trump's renaming campaign has continued regardless, including orders on Lake Ontario and floated plans for New Mexico.

So the gulf name was never really the whole reason, it was just the one that sounded better in a press release. Turns out you can lose White House access for not handing over your own photograph, which is a strange kind of copyright dispute to settle with a briefing room ban. A judge already called it what it was, and the renaming spree since suggests nobody up there learned a thing from getting caught.
