Democrat Brandon Dukes leads Republican Scott Timko by fewer than 100 votes in a special election for Pennsylvania's state House 12th District, a seat Trump carried by 18 points in 2024 and Republicans held since 1999. The state's election bureau says the race falls outside the threshold for an automatic recount.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and state party chair Eugene DePasquale both hailed the result as a sign of momentum heading into November's midterms, while Timko told supporters the loss doesn't change the party's focus on the general election.

National Democrats, including Rep. Ted Lieu, pointed to the flip as further evidence of a pattern of overperformance in special elections this cycle.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A win by fewer than a hundred votes in a low-turnout special election is now, apparently, a mandate, a wave, and a preview of November all at once. Both sides will keep reading tea leaves out of these contests until an actual midterm forces them to read something else.
