Florida lieutenant governor nominee Bryan Avila filled in for gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds at a Tampa Tiger Bay Club forum after Donalds cited a scheduling conflict, then was asked repeatedly whether he or Donalds disagreed with any Trump policy, including mass deportations that fellow Republican Rep. Maria Salazar has called 'gone too far.' Avila responded by pivoting to immigration numbers from prior administrations, ignored the question outright on a second attempt, and on a third cited disagreement with the Federal Reserve's rate hike, an agency structured to be independent of the administration entirely.

Donalds himself has voiced mild concern this week about Trump's proposed $5,000 dividend checks, a milder break than Gov. Ron DeSantis, who criticized the plan directly as inflationary borrowing. The Jolly campaign separately accused Donalds of ducking two prior debate commitments, a claim a Tiger Bay Club member's account appears to support and the Donalds campaign denies.

Three chances to say a plain sentence about the president's own deportation policy, and the best on offer was a complaint about interest rates set by an agency that doesn't answer to the campaign at all. That's not an answer, it's a magic trick where the rabbit is a completely different animal.
