Sen. Chuck Grassley said Trump's threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, set to take effect Aug. 19, should serve as a 'wake-up call' for Canada, framing them as a negotiating lever tied to disputes over provincial liquor bans, dairy supply management, and vehicle quotas.

Grassley insisted the tariffs shouldn't be used to destroy CUSMA even as the administration has called the trade pact 'irrelevant' and declined to extend it, triggering a decade-long rolling review process. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer called talks with Canada 'constructive' but offered no sign of an imminent deal.

Canadian officials Dominic LeBlanc and Janice Charette remain in Washington through the weekend for continued negotiations ahead of the deadline.

Praising free trade while backing tariffs that threaten to gut the very trade agreement you claim to support is not nuance, it's having it both ways at the Iowa State Fair — a lever, sure, but levers tend to break things when yanked hard enough.
